Playing Music Is Great for Your Brain!

I just read a fascinating little article on the cerebral benefits of playing music. You can read the article at this link. Here’s an excerpt:

“Music probably does something unique," explains neuropsychologist Catherine Loveday of the University of Westminster. "It stimulates the brain in a very powerful way because of our emotional connection with it."

Unlike brain games, playing an instrument is a rich and complex experience. This is because it's integrating information from the senses of vision, hearing, and touch, along with fine movements. This can result in long-lasting changes in the brain.”

"Music, Explained" on Netflix

Nexflix has a series called “Explained.” In roughly-15-minute episodes, the series dives into (and “explains”) a range of topics, from cryptocurrency to cricket to the world water crisis. The episode I watched this evening was on the subject of music.

The episode explores a bit of the science behind why our human brains enjoy music so much, and why other species can’t enjoy it in quite the same way.

The episode goes on to explain how our brains’ special physiological connection to music is put to use in various types of therapies. All-in-all, the show was eighteen minutes extremely well-spent, and I highly recommend it!
